Annual Well-Woman Exam

Annual well-woman exams are an important part of self-care for all women from adolescence to post-menopause. Yearly gynecology exams are a vital preventative health care measure that includes screenings for gynecologic cancers and sexually transmitted diseases, as well as breast exams. Dr. Diane Aslanis encourages all women to be proactive in caring for their reproductive health throughout their lives.

At your annual wellness exam, Dr. Aslanis will ask you about your health history, exercise, nutrition, lifestyle habits and menstrual cycles. Your height, weight and blood pressure will also be recorded. The exam will include:

  • Pelvic exam with Pap smear
  • Bloodwork ordered as needed
  • Clinical breast exam
  • Depending on age, order a mammogram
  • Age-appropriate testing ordered

The annual wellness exam aims to identify any potential health risks and educate patients on healthy lifestyle choices. It is important to discuss any health concerns or changes in your health with your doctor. Keeping your annual wellness exam will help ensure any health issues will be caught early and treatment, if required, can begin as soon as possible. Early detection and yearly appointments are the leading ways to assure you maintain a good quality of life.

Menstrual Disorders

Discussing your menstrual cycle with Dr. Aslanis at your annual wellness exam is important to establish baseline information about your reproductive health and other gynecology concerns. If you experience any abnormal spotting or bleeding between periods, heavy bleeding, painful cramps or unbearable mood swings (PMS) with your menstrual cycle, Dr. Aslanis can help. Occasionally, some women have to put their lives on hold due to disruptive menstrual disorders. However, once your symptoms are accurately diagnosed, Dr. Aslanis offers several treatment options to make your cycle more bearable.

Heavy Bleeding

Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, also known as menorrhagia, is a common gynecology problem that can be attributed to:

  • Hormonal imbalances due to age
  • Fibroids or polyps
  • Medical conditions such as thyroid problems, blood clotting disorders, complications from an IUD, infection, precancerous conditions of the uterine lining

There are several tests that can be performed to determine the cause of your heavy or prolonged bleeding. After an examination and testing, Dr. Aslanis will provide the best treatment options for you so that your menstrual cycles are more manageable.

Painful Menstrual Periods

Women who suffer from painful menstrual cycles on a regular basis, called dysmenorrhea, should call Dr. Aslanis. If your periods cause you to miss work or school due to excessive pain, it is not normal. Conditions such as uterine fibroids and endometriosis can cause painful menstrual periods. Other risk factors for dysmenorrhea include:

  • Family history of painful periods
  • Smoking
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Irregular periods

If you are experiencing severe pain during your menstrual cycle, board certified gynecologist Dr. Aslanis can help. Please call (434) 392-9200

Management of Abnormal Pap Smears and Colposcopy

A Pap test is given at your annual wellness exam to make sure the cells of your cervix are healthy. Cervical cancer screenings are recommended beginning at the age of 21. If the results of your Pap test come back positive, your doctor has found abnormal cells on your cervix – but this does not mean you have cervical cancer.

Abnormal results will usually warrant further investigation and repeat testing. There are several reasons that can cause the cervical cells to change, but the most common cause is the human papillomavirus (HPV). This continues to be the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI), and it is directly linked to cervical cancer.

Colposcopy

After an abnormal Pap test, Dr. Aslanis may offer a procedure called a colposcopy, in which a scope is inserted to obtain a magnified view as well as a biopsy of your cervix. A biopsy is the removal of a small area of tissue that appears suspicious upon inspection. The biopsy is sent to a lab for further testing. A colposcopy is used to diagnose:

  • Genital warts
  • Inflammation or infection of the cervix
  • Precancerous changes in the cervix

Dr. Aslanis will have a follow-up appointment to discuss the results of the biopsy, treatment options and help guide you to make the best health care choices.
